What makes it good: Basically, Erased is a sci-fi & murder mystery in full heartstrings-tug-on mode. I’m talking adulting-gone-wrong and heavy trauma—It’s as much about chasing who you could’ve been as it is about chasing a killer. A shameless attempt to elicit tears, A-1 Pictures. And I hate you because it worked so well.

2. Monster

What’s it about: Dr. Kenzo Tenma saves a kid named Johan who grows up to be a murderer who wrecks Tenma’s life. So what’s a doc to do but to go full-on Liam Neeson and chase this angelic-looking psychopath down? On paper it sounds like a basic good-vs-evil anime gig, but hold on a sec.
What makes it good: This is Seinen and mangaka Naoki Urasawa we’re talking about, and he doesn’t do black and white. Set in the Cold War aftermath, Monster shows how our experiences can twist us in terrifying ways. It made me think, and yeah, it made me a little paranoid. Shaped by the world that’s often anything but good, the monster could be anyone.

3. Vinland Saga

What’s it about: Young Thorfinn is out to settle the score for his father’s death. His target? Askeladd, a cunning mercenary leader. This is the Viking world, so don’t expect peace talks over tea. The series is not shy on violence, but it never glorifies it either.
What makes it good: Mangaka Makoto Yukimura did his homework. I mean, he crafted a Seinen story that’s a) largely about historical events (battle of Hjørungavåg is a big one), b) Viking warrior culture (characters are based on real people), and then c) got studios Wit and MAPPA to bring it all to life beautifully? Your favorite anime could never.
4. Mushishi

What’s it about: Ginko roams a world where supernatural Mushi—basically life in its purest form—coexist with humans. Not much is known about them, so Ginko is out there to learn and to sort out the tricky situations they create.
What makes it good: Artland animated Yuki Urushibara’s manga flawlessly, giving it a nature-doc feel with gorgeous scenery and soothing tunes. I half expected for David Attenborough to jump in with some narration! A fantastic Iyashikei with self-contained episodes centered on nature, life, and human connections.
5. Cowboy Bebop

What’s it about: It’s 2071, Spike Spiegel and his crew aboard the Bebop chase bounties across the galaxy. Cash is the game, but with haunting pasts and clashing personalities, it’s never just a simple catch.
What makes it good: Shinichirō Watanabe has style, sure, but the way he humanizes his characters is what really gets me. The Bebop crew is dealing with traumas and loneliness, desperately searching for redemption and meaning in their messed-up lives. But when your past keeps tripping you up, it’s a tough damn gig. *sniff*
6. Berserk ’97

What’s it about: Guts, this absolute unit of a guy, battles supernatural nasties and personal demons in a medieval world. He joins forces with the Band of the Hawk, led by the mysterious Griffith, as they face, umm, let’s call them “trials that test their bonds”.
What makes it good: Berserk is a hard R, so squeamish types, keep scrolling. The animation shows its age and the shoestring budget, but the story? Seinen gold. Kentaro Miura turned out a dark tragedy that’s loaded with deep questions. In a world that’s basically a dumpster fire, how do you hold onto hope? And more importantly, how big does your sword need to be?

7. Ping Pong the Animation

What’s it about: Smile and Peco are high school buddies who are total opposites, both in personality and their ping pong game. As they battle it out in intense tournaments, we get into their personal stories, ambitions and growth.
What makes it good: I could give two [redacted] about table tennis. Still, ask me about this anime and I will talk your ear off. Based on Taiyō Matsumoto’s A-list manga and directed by the legendary Masaaki Yuasa, it’s a new, mature take on sports anime. It has this raw, authentic feel that nails what it’s like to compete, to have a rival, and to care deeply about something.
8. March Comes In Like A Lion

What makes it good: What I love about Chica Umino’s manga-turned-anime is how it conveys heavy emotions—loneliness, depression, searching for where you fit—without spelling them out. It’s all in the colors, the visual metaphors, and bittersweet music that hit you right in the kokoro. If you’ve ever felt like an outsider looking in, keep tissues nearby.

9. Hellsing Ultimate

Both heroes and villains are absolutely bonkers, and the dialogue is more like grand philosophical speeches. A dark fantasy so absurd yet so awesome that all I can say is – watch it.

10. Kaguya-Sama: Love is War
